Evaluation of the in vitro antimicrobial activity of prototype filters

A test of the in vitro antimicrobial capacity of the prototype filter was carried out. For this, 3.0 x 1.2 cm pieces of the filter were incubated in a saline solution with the tested bacteria S. aureus and E. coli. These mixtures were incubated for 24 hrs at 37 ° C and the bacteria were recovered by counting colony-forming units per milliliter by serial dilution.

Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of prototype filters subjected to an environmental pilot test

Prototype filters were installed in triplicate in three home-type air conditioning units (House 1, House 2 and Office 1), they were allowed to work for 25 days. Subsequently, the microorganisms recovered from the air conditioning filters were removed and analyzed for subsequent counting (Fig. 2).

From the analysis of the results, it can be seen that fewer bacteria were recovered from the prototype filter than from the control filter that has non-functionalized LLDPE. It is important to note that in the case of House 1 and Office 1, the value 100 in the control filter is referential, since the amount of bacteria recovered is> 100 bacteria per cmand it was decided to place a value of 100 to be able to appreciate the recovery values in the prototype functionalized LLDPE filter.

To determine the antibacterial activity of the Master batch control and Master batch functionalized, the test was performed in triplicate, incubating 1 g of master batch in 2 mL of physiological serum with a bacterial concentration of 1.3 x 106 CFU / mL for S aureus and 1.25 x 106 CFU / mL for E. coli, shaking for 24 h at 37 ° C.
