NANO COPPER PARTICLES

A REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGY

“Nano” is a Greek prefix that means tiny, dwarf, little. This prefix is used in the International System (SI) of units to indicate a factor of 10-9, that is, one millionth of something. Therefore, a nanometer is one millionth of a millimeter, a length 80,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair and 10 times the diameter of a hydrogen atom (Corbertt et al., 2000).

Nanomaterials (NMs) or nanoparticles (NPs) can, in theory, be processed from almost any chemical substance (Dreher, 2004), so their diversity is very extensive. These can be manufactured through two main methods; “Top-down” grinding bulk materials or “bottom-up” through chemical synthesis or self-assembly of smaller compounds (Forough and Farhadi, 2010; Pal et al., 2011).

According to the recommendation of the European Commission of October 18, 2011 regarding the definition of nanomaterial, nanomaterials are defined as “a natural, secondary or manufactured material that contains particles, loose or forming an aggregate or agglomerate and in which the 50% or more of the particles in the numerical granulometry have one or more external dimensions in the size range between 1 nm and 100 nm “.

Nanomaterials are being applied in more and more fields within engineering and technology. One of the key benefits of nanomaterials is that their properties differ from bulk material of the same composition, greatly increasing their manifestation.

The properties of nanoparticles, for example, can be easily altered by varying their size, shape, and chemical environment.

Copper is an element of block D, period 4. It is a ductile metal with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. The morphology of the copper nanoparticles is round, and they look like a brown to black powder.

Research on copper nanoparticles applications is ongoing to discover their potential dielectric, magnetic, electrical, optical, imaging, catalytic, biomedical, and bioscience properties.
